Happy National Moth Week! To celebrate the incredible diversity of these underrated and fascinating creatures, we are hosting a nighttime moth survey at Goose Pond Sanctuary, home to hundreds of moth species. Read about the June 2022 moth survey experience.
At this National Moth Week event, participants will learn from Angus Mossman, local moth expert from Sauk County, and see many of the active moth species that come to the white sheet/black light set up. Participants will also be able to go on a guided walk through the prairie with flashlights looking for moths.
This is both a learning and a citizen science opportunity. We will tally the numbers and species of moths we find. The data will be used to assess the diversity at Goose Pond and beyond, as well as be submitted to a larger biodiversity database.
Participants should bring a flashlight or headlamp.
