Build a 5-plant native garden for your balcony, patio or porch to bolster birds, bees and butterflies!
Join Eric Manges of Eric Manges Nature, Holy Wisdom Monastery, SOS Save Our Songbirds, and Southern Wisconsin Bird Alliance for a presentation about growing native plants in any location — including a small balcony or front porch — and how that container of native plants can support wildlife.

Liven up your porch or balcony while supporting the local ecosystem. Following a presentation about how to create and care for your porch prairie, you’ll plant an 11" container with native plants benefitting birds, bees, butterflies and more to take home. All materials provided.

Join us for an evening stroll that is filled with the evening sounds of nature. Frogs, toads, and evening-active birds are calling heartily this time of year, and because each species has their own unique sound, we can identify which species are present even without seeing them.

This field trip is full. Join the waiting list. Birding is a fun, rewarding hobby — but can be a bit intimidating to get into! This Beginning Birders event is designed to give you an easy, welcoming entry-point to birding. We will walk slowly through the Arboretum, looking and listening for birds, identifying the ones we find, and talking about how to tell them apart. No pressure, no judgement, just fun!

Olympia Marble butterflies have been frequent in previous springs where there are sandy barrens along this trail. There was a timber harvest this winter which may reduce the number of all butterfly species in the area due to habitat disruption. Bring binoculars if you have them (close-focusing ones work best). We will begin on the south loop of the trail. If there’s time, we will continue along the loop north of Turtleville Road.

In a celebration of early summer, we'll hike the paths to listen, see, and smell the natural world on what should be a warm summer’s eve. This is the peak time of the year to see bats, glowworms and fireflies, and hear the calls of owls in the woods and the frogs, toads and night birds of the ponds and marshes. The spectacular display of fireflies at this site alone is worth the hike, and we may also get to hear the calls of coyotes nearby.

Smith-Reiner Drumlin Prairie is a small parcel owned and managed by The Prairie Enthusiasts and a State Natural Area. It has 13 acres of remnant prairie between the two glacial drumlins. The drumlins will be covered with rough and cylindrical blazing stars and the valleys in between will have gay feather. This should be a monarch and grassland bird hotspot. Gentians and other prairie specialist flowers will also be blooming. This is a trip in conjunction with Southern Wisconsin Butterfly Association and The Prairie Enthusiasts.

As winter sets in, smaller ponds and lakes in south-central Wisconsin freeze, causing migrating birds to become concentrated on Madison’s large lakes, which remain open longer. We will look for waterfowl, gulls, and winter birds. This trip has produced some unusual sightings in the past, including Red-throated Loons, so don’t miss it!

Just as unique as their coloration and shape, bird sounds come in all tunes and pitches. Identifying birds by their song is an exciting activity and skill, and any experienced bird watcher will tell you that most birding is done without actually seeing the bird, but by hearing it.
This class teaches the tools and techniques for identifying birds by close listening (we don’t spend a lot of time memorizing particular bird songs). We welcome participants who are new to the hobby of birding by ear, as well as birders of any level interested in continuing to learn and practice their birding by ear skills. This class is for anyone interested in birding by ear, of all physical abilities, ages, and birding skills.

Experience restorations of various stages from recent plantings to a well-developed 29-year old prairie. Other habitat features of this landscape include: a shallow wetlands, open water marsh/tamarack-sphagnum bogs, woodlands, and a black oak savanna. Join us for an enjoyable hike as we discuss the site’s history, stages of restorations, bird and plant identification, and more.

Over a billion birds die every year in the US after hitting windows, and almost half of those happen at homes. The good news is that the solutions are affordable and easy to implement! This presentation will share some of the science behind why birds hit windows and will also provide recommendations on ways to address problematic windows at homes and in our communities to make migration and buildings safer for birds.

Join the Madison Nature Journal Club at the Verona Public Library to sketch and write about our observations of nature. This library is directly next to the trails of Badger Prairie County Park. It includes a small pond where waterbirds often hang out. Inside the library there is also a series of large windows (treated with a Bird-Safe Glass window treatment!) with a scenic view. Depending on the weather we can journal indoors or outdoors.

Think spring as we learn about easy steps to support birds and native bees in our natural spaces. Spring blooms for bees also provide food for birds. Bee and pollinator gardens provide a good start with perennial native plants. Build up your habitat and expand the birds you see (including some colorful favorites) by adding native trees and shrubs to feed and shelter birds. Double your fun by investing in a more natural habitat for all!
