Why hunt Sandhill Cranes in Wisconsin?

According to the International Crane Foundation, Wisconsin provides critical breeding grounds for the Eastern migratory population of these iconic birds, and a hunt poses uncertainties and dangers to this population. These are the key facts:

  • Though those in favor of a hunt have claimed otherwise, there is no scientific evidence that suggests a responsibly-managed crane hunt will reduce crop damage concerns for farmers.

  • Wisconsinites do not want, and will largely not participate in, a Sandhill Crane hunting season in our state.

  • Estimates by the Wisconsin DNR suggest that a crane hunt in Wisconsin will be costly and operate at a financial loss—about $1.6 million annually will need to be subsidized by Wisconsin taxpayers.

Being an iconic Wisconsin bird species and an amazing conservation success story is not enough to protect Sandhill Cranes.

Where we are now, and what’s next

Thank you to every single person who contacted their state legislators and encouraged them to vote against a crane hunting season! As of March 19, 2026, neither bill that included a Sandhill Crane hunting season (AB-117 and AB-1033) were passed by the Wisconsin State Legislature.

Though this is the third time in recent memory that bills mandating a Sandhill Crane hunting season have failed, Southern Wisconsin Bird Alliance will remain vigilant for the possibility that a proposed hunt may come up again in future legislative sessions. We will also continue to be in close communication with our partners and with the broader alliance of bird conservation organizations throughout the state on this issue and related issues.

Thank you for your efforts on behalf of Wisconsin’s Sandhill Cranes!
