Drawing Dead Stuff
Adult education class
Registration is now open to SoWBA members!
Welcome to our Drawing Dead Stuff adult education class! In this class, you will learn some basic techniques for creating drawings from specimens — birds, mammals, and plants. We’ll pull out educational specimens like skulls, feathers, study skins, mounts, and dried plants. You’ll get to see them up close, and draw! If you like, we’ll have dissection microscopes and magnifying glasses available for you to use.
If you just want access to the specimens, you’re welcome to join us and draw at your own pace. If you want instruction, we’ll work with you to make your drawings look more realistic, three dimensional, and more accurate (you’re not just drawing a skull, you’re drawing a coyote skull!) Specifically, we’ll start by using basic shapes to make accurate sketches, then we’ll check proportions before moving on to shading skills.
We’ll provide computer paper for you to use and keep, and pencils and erasers to borrow. You’re welcome to bring your favorite art supplies too, if you wish.
Your instructor will be Carolyn Byers, Southern Wisconsin Bird Alliance’s education director and artist behind Green Sparrow Arts, and creator of the artwork below!

Registration is limited to 15 people and costs $15/person. Registration opens to SoWBA members on Jan. 26, and any remaining seats will open to the public on Feb. 16. Want to join SoWBA as a member? Click here to join.
