How to Get That Shot: A virtual introduction to wild bird photography

  • Henry Vilas Zoo 702 South Randall Avenue Madison, WI, 53715 United States (map)

Birds are captivating, they evoke a sense of wonder, and they allow us to experience the natural world. Even — and especially — now, when we are cooped up, separated, and eager to be outside, bird photography can be a great activity and creative outlet.

Best of all, bird photography can be done in your own backyard and neighborhood! This is a challenging activity, and a good bird photographer goes through a lot of preparation and steps before even pressing the shutter button. Luck favors the prepared.

In this class, experienced bird and nature photographer Arlene Koziol will teach you how to maximize your preparedness so you can get that great shot. You’ll learn about the minimal camera requirements for bird photography, how to hand-hold the camera for birds in flight, what to wear and be prepared for outdoors, how to find birds, anticipate their behavior, follow very important bird photography ethics, and more.

Please note, this is not a class about exposure and camera settings. Class participants should be familiar with how their camera works prior to the class period.

ONLINE FORMAT: While originally planned for an in-person experience, this class will be held online in an interactive platform called Zoom. Participants will be able to see and hear Arlene present, see her screen, and images of what she’s describing, and ask questions. It’s free for users, and easy to use!

This class is part of Madison Audubon’s Audubon Naturalist Series for adult education. Early registration is limited to Madison Audubon members only. Not a member yet? Learn more about joining Madison Audubon here!
