Nature Journaling: Coral

  • Middleton Public Library 7425 Hubbard Avenue Middleton, WI, 53562 United States (map)

Join the Nature Journal Club to sketch, write, and wonder about coral. There will be some coral “skeletons” from the Field Museum’s education department that you can handle, and a variety of coral pieces bought from local aquarium shops. Coral are pretty mysterious and that’s part of the fun. This event should provide lots of opportunities to get your curiosity on.

In addition to looking closely at coral, sketching and writing, we can also look at some imagery of living coral colonies and watch some short video clips that may answer some of our questions.

DETAILS:

  • MEETING SPOT: Go to the meeting room in the lower level of the library. Take the stairs or elevator down. There will be a sign in the hallway. If you can’t find us, ask a librarian.

  • WHAT TO BRING: a pencil and paper, or anything fancier

  • WHO SHOULD COME? Anyone–no drawing experience needed. Nature journaling is great for beginners. Children are welcome but should be accompanied by an adult.

  • ACCESSIBILITY: accessible parking and building

    BATHROOMS: yes

This event is cohosted by artist and educator Amy Schleser and Southern Wisconsin Bird Alliance.

What is NATURE JOURNALING?

Nature journaling includes drawing pictures of nature but also writing questions and notes about what we’re observing. Our goal is to look closer and wonder more deeply about nature. We think about drawing as a tool to help us notice–you don’t need to draw beautifully to be a nature journaler. At the club we’ll talk briefly about ideas of what to write about, using prompts such as "I notice... I wonder... It reminds me of..." You'll also get some nature journaling tips about ways you could document what you’re seeing and sensing onto your pages.
