Fall Leaves: Nature Art & Observation

Registration is now open to Southern Wisconsin Bird Alliance members! In this in-person class, you’ll learn how to create a nature journal page by observing, sketching, and writing about autumn leaves. This can be a powerful way to notice new things and to wonder more deeply about nature.

CANCELLED: Sketching with Scopes

We’re sorry, this event has been cancelled. Join us for a morning of sketching waterfowl at Goose Pond! We will meet at the Wingspan Pavilion, situated in the Bicentennial Prairie overlooking Goose Pond. We'll brush up on gesture drawings and thumbnail sketches in the beginning of class. Then you'll get to practice using optics while sketching. We'll have binoculars and some spotting scopes for you to borrow, but please bring your own if you like.

Drawing Nature (3-part series)

Welcome to our Nature Sketchbook Series! This collection of classes will help you sharpen — or develop — your art skills so you can enjoy capturing the outdoors on paper. These classes are great for beginners and people in the "I draw stick figures" camp, and also more advanced artists that don't have a lot of experience in the class topic. Your instructor will be Carolyn Byers, Madison Audubon’s education director and artist behind Green Sparrow Arts.

Each class will be held via Zoom at 8:00-9:00 p.m. on the Tuesdays listed below. These will be virtual classes: you’ll need an internet connection and a device to watch the class on. Having a microphone and video camera will help you participate in the class, but is not necessary.

Sunsets, Sketching, and Sitting at Pheasant Branch

Join us for a low-key evening “sit-spot” at Pheasant Branch Conservancy to enjoy the sunset and company of fellow-nature lovers! Carolyn will be painting the sunset with watercolors, and you're welcome to bring art supplies too! You could also bring a nature journal, write poetry, record what you see or hear with a notebook or camera, or just simply enjoy the evening. Carolyn will help with plant and bird ID. We'll also keep an eye out for insects, mammals, tracks, and scat.

Have you heard about our new Nature Sketchbook Series? We’ll be drawing our way from winter to spring, building our observation and artistic skills as we go. There will be five classes, each devoted to a different topic: drawing plants, birds, landscapes, color mixing, and building a beautiful sketchbook page.

If you’d like to check out the topics and techniques we’ll be focusing on in these classes, come watch this live sketching session with Carolyn, your teacher. She’ll be sketching from photos she took during a trip to Utah in 2015. Watch her build a sketchbook page, while she walks you through the steps she’s taking as she draws.

To tune in live, go to Madison Audubon’s Facebook page on Tuesday, Jan. 12, 8:00pm CST and wait for the livestream to begin. Can’t attend live? No worries! Watch the recording on Facebook or YouTube — links will be posted here afterward.
