Stan was a very good friend. We enjoyed working for him at DNR when he was the Director for the Bureau of Endangered Resources. His work greatly helped protect our natural environment and provided thousands of acres for public use. We also were fortunate to work with Stan at Madison Audubon. Stan served as the Board President and assisted us in testifying against the Arlington ethanol plant. We will always remember all the years that Stan and Jeannie coordinated the silent auction at the Madison Audubon Art Fair.
He, Jeannie, and their long-time friend Sue Ames took annual trips in the winter to Goose Pond to view one of Sue’s favorite species of birds, snow buntings. When Sue passed away, she left a bequest to Goose Pond which was used immediately to help purchase the 40-acre Sue Ames Prairie.
Stan was a frequent visitor to Goose Pond. Never without a camera, Stan provided us with beautiful photographs of the sanctuary and important images of events. One example was of a plethora of photos that he and Jim Addis took at the auction of muck farm equipment when Madison Audubon purchased the 1,460-acre Zeloski Marsh near Lake Mills. His full obituary can be found here.
