Come explore the birdlife of the expansive grass- and shrubland of what was once the world’s largest ammunition plant, and now an Important Bird Area. The site is well known for its populations of grassland and shrub-loving birds like bobolink, eastern meadowlark, Bell's vireo, and many sparrow species such as Henslow's, grasshopper, field, and clay-colored. We’ll see management that has been undertaken by the various landowners, and discuss its effects on the breeding birds, as well as the changes that have occurred here since the field trip leader began studying them in 1998.

We’ll meet in the parking area south of the entrance, by the historical museum at 8:00 a.m., then carpool through the area. Note that the roads here are rough. Expect some short walks along roads and easy trails. To carpool, meet at  7:10 a.m. at the Middleton Park & Ride (4340 Parmenter Street, Middleton).
