This 780-acre wetland complex contains excellent wildlife habitat consisting of restored prairie, oak savanna, emergent wetland, and open water. Madison Audubon stewards the 60-acre Erstad Prairie and the US Fish and Wildlife Service manages 720 acres. During the Breeding Bird Atlas II, 74 species of birds were confirmed nesting in the area: nine species of waterfowl, Red-necked Grebes, Red-headed Woodpeckers, and Yellow-headed Blackbirds, to name a few.
We’ll meet at Erstad Prairie (43°20'34.7"N 89°18'17.0"W). We’ll hike over mowed trail, paved trail, and boardwalk to access both sites. Binoculars and cameras will be useful tools to bring if you have them!
You’re welcome to bring a lunch and eat together at Erstad Prairie, Schoeneberg Marsh, or Goose Pond Sanctuary.
