We’re sorry, this field trip is canceled due to concerns around COVID-19.
The 780-acre wetland complex also contains restored prairie and oak savanna habitats. Madison Audubon Society owns the 60-acre Erstad Prairie and the US Fish and Wildlife Service owns 720 acres. Seventy four species of birds were confirmed nesting in the local area on the recently completed Breeding Bird Atlas including nine species of waterfowl; redheads, red-necked grebes, red-headed woodpeckers and yellow-headed blackbirds to name a few. We will hike about 3/8 mile to an overlook on a paved/boardwalk trail. We will also explore prairie restorations including an area with 21,000 milkweed stems that provides super habitat for breeding monarch butterflies.
