The next couple of blogs, you faithful 6 readers, will focus on reasons to be thankful in this dismal year.
One is Wildlife. The DNR just released an absolutely delightful report on Snapshot Wisconsin and a great wildlife photo from each of Wisconsin's counties. Many of the photos have additional links so you can learn more about different species. Please check out the one on opossums, my nominee for the Wisconsin mammalian species that needs more love and respect. Although mammals occupy the greatest number of photos, you'll find some great bird shots, including some endangered species and a spectacular golden eagle.
Snapshot Wisconsin aims to give the DNR more data on wildlife populations and behavior by enabling folks to send in trail cam photos. The exercise has now generated 50 million photos (!). Read on the different ways you can participate. Lots of folks are having lots of fun and learning a lot in this program.
It also reminds us how blessed we are in Wisconsin to still have the variety and amount of wildlife we do. Outside is still the safest place to be these days. With decent weather holding and deer season about to end, now is a great time to return to the outdoors and see what you can see.
By the way, to those who hunted deer this year, I hope you had an enjoyable, safe, and productive season. Like many of you, Sally and I were not able to have family for Thanksgiving. But our kids and grandkids are staying healthy as I so hope your loved ones are. Better days are coming (I wouldn't mind if they sped up a bit).
Best wishes,
Topf Wells, Madison Audubon board member and chair of advocacy committee
